One day Jesus was surrounded by a crowd when his mother and brothers showed up outside and said that they wanted a word with him. Jesus responded, “Who do you think are my mother and brothers?” Looking around him, he said, “Right here, right in front of you are my mother and my brothers. Whoever obeys God’s will is my brother and sister and mother. (Mark 3:31-35) Another time Jesus assured his disciples, "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you" (John 14:18).
We usually don’t choose who is in our family. Some children grow up with violent or disturbed relationships in their families. Eventually, we all may lose loved ones through death or broken relationships and feel like orphans. But we are chosen to be children in an eternal family that shares God’s love and faith. We face a future with challenges like those of the time of Jesus. We can embrace each other as Jesus embraced the children. Everyone who comes to Jesus belongs. They will not be turned away. No one needs to be an orphan, because God’s family is waiting for us.
Thank You dear God for being our Heavenly Father. Thank You for opening our hearts to our sisters and brothers in faith. Nothing can ever separate us from Your love. In the name of Jesus our brother and Savior, Amen.
