070427 Friday Focus lunch with Royce & Darlene Slate

Royce and Darlene Slate are long time very active members of Dexter Avenue United Methodist Church. They are multi-talented Disciples of Jesus Christ. Darlene plays violin and dulcimer and sings folk songs with her husband. Royce is a jack of all trades: building almost 500 dulcimers, several violins, and other wooden or gourd objects and instruments; completely repairing and reconditioning antique organs including the 1900 Pilscher Brothers' tracker action organ in the Dexter sanctuary and the 1880 reed pump organs in the chapel and most recently the one Pastor Ron inherited from his parents.

This recital is on the theme of the light-filled joy and gladness we sing about in our Christian life. Scripture verses inspire us to song: sometimes in pure joy, sometimes with hilarious delight, sometimes with pure devotion, but always with sincere appreciation of our Lord’s guidance and inspiration.

Again Jesus spoke to them saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life" (John 8:12).

HEAVENLY SUNLIGHT
1. Walking in sunlight all of my journey,
Over the mountains, through the deep vale;
Jesus has said, "I'll never forsake thee,"
Promise divine that never can fail.
CHORUS: Heavenly sunlight, heavenly sunlight,
Flooding my soul with glory divine;
Hallelujah, I am rejoicing,
Singing His praises, Jesus is mine.
2. In the bright sunlight, ever rejoicing,
Pressing my way to mansions above;
Sing His praises gladly I'm walking,
Walking in sunlight, sunlight of love. CHORUS

Royce sings the following humorous song about how he thinks we shouldn't worry about how our bodies are buried. The Glad Bag is a popular trash bag brand name that emphasizes the ease and convenience by which discarded garbage and waste is thrown away. With tongue and cheek parody Royce says that "when I die, just Send Me to Glory in a Glad Bag."
(LYRICS BY Don and Mim Carson, Steve Mason, John Biggs, Lee Miller and Emily Russell)
1. People tell me that I ought to save my money
So that I could be laid away in style,
In a walnut box with all the fancy trimmin's
Vacuum sealed to keep me fresh a while.
CHORUS: But Send me to Glory in a glad bag.
Don't waste a fancy coffin on my bones.
Just put me out on the curb next Tuesday
Let the city sanitation bear me home.
2. I don't need a fancy funeral
Flowers and tears and all that jive
When I'm dead that won't impress me
Just buy me a beer while I'm alive. CHORUS
3. There's trouble at the sanitary landfill
It's filling up with permanent debris,
So make my glad bag out of corn not plastic
So it will decompose along with me.
4. If I should die upon the eve of Christmas
Place my glad bag by the Christmas tree;
And when the children open all their presents,
The big surprise will be the death of me.
5. Sell all my worldly possessions
And buy yourself a case or two of Pabst.
Let the empties be my memorial tombstone.
Engrave them with this epitaph:
6. If I should die upon the eve of Christmas
Place my glad bag by the Christmas tree,
And when the children open all their presents
7. Now it may be that I am not bound for Glory,
But to another place I would not choose;
So if it seems that I'm headed that direction,
An oven bag would be the thing to use.

Swing low, sweet sanitation vehicle
or (sweet vehicle)
Comin' for to carry me home

I SAW THE LIGHT
1. I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin;
I wouldn't ask my dear Saviour in.
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night;
Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
CHORUS: I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness; no more night.
Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight.
Praise the Lord, I saw the light.
2. Just like a blind man I wandered alone,
Worries and fears I claimed for my own.
Then like the blind man Jesus gave back his sight;
Praise the Lord, I saw the light! CHORUS

"You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under eh bushel basket, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,
Hide it under a bushel, no, I’m gonna let it shine.

“This world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4).

SEND THE LIGHT
1. There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave,
Send the light, Send the light!
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
Send the light, Send the light!
CHORUS: Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore.
Send the light the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine forever more.
2. Let us pray that grace may everywhere abound,
Send the light, Send the light!
And a Christlike spirit everywhere be found.
Send the light, Send the light! CHORUS
3. Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
Send the light, Send the light.
Let us gather jewels for a crown above
Send the light, Send the light. CHORUS
