070306 Tuesday Breakfast with Mayor Bobby Bright of Montgomery, Alabama

The current mayor of Montgomery is a sincere practical Christian. His leadership reflects his devotion to God through Jesus Christ, while being fair and impartial to all citizens.

The following information is based on some of this recorded message and a Wikipedia article.

Bobby N. Bright is the current mayor of Montgomery since 1999. In this presentation Mayor Bright describes his humble beginnings as one of 15 children to a share cropper in rural Alabama. He first came to Montgomery over 30 years ago when he became a correctional officer. He then worked his way through law school and became the attorney for the Corrections department of Alabama.

He also speaks of his continued redevelopment of the downtown Montgomery area by public and private interests to bring visitors back to the formerly depressed downtown business district where Dexter Avenue United Methodist Church is located.

Some of the revitalization includes a new minor-league baseball team called the Montgomery Biscuits which started playing in 2004 at newly-developed Riverwalk Stadium. The Riverfront Amphitheatre opened the same year hosting concerts on the banks of the Alabama River where cotton and riverboats had once thrived, and the historic Union Street Station was revamped and its enormous covered Train Shed became a part-time concert venue with many national acts performing under its roof. A new high-rise hotel and Civic Center are currently under construction. A smaller performing arts center and an Intermodal Transportation Center are also part of the development plans by 2008.

Mayor Bright was also instrumental in bringing automobile manufacturer Hyundai to the local area, which built its new North American headquarters in the far southern area of the city. Production began in 2005, bringing over 2,000 direct jobs plus thousands more from suppliers and a large boost to the local economy.
