070209 Friday Focus - Linda Swayne, Administrative Assistant to Bishop Goodpaster of the Alabama West Florida Conference of the UMC

Linda Swayne introduces herself and one of her teaching tools (Faith Lessons on the Promised Land - Crossroads of the World by Ray Vander Laan) to help us understand the graphic and tangible lessons found at the Tel Gezer crossroads where the “via maris” (Way of the Sea - an ancient north-south route in Palestine) and the Jericho road (ancient east-west trade route) converge. Our Christian lives should be a standing testimony before others as those presenting themselves in the Old Testament “city gates” (Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Esther 2:5-8, 19-23). In this way, our personal lives are like the “standing stones” (Massebahs, see Genesis 28:18-22; 1 Kings 14:22-23) just outside the ancient city gates of Tel Gezer and other ancient cities. Thus, we can cleanse the land by confronting evil and using the tools of society to redeem your world for God.

Linda’s questions for reflection are:

1. The “crossroad” at which I believe God wants me to make an impact is . . .

. . . because of the following reasons:

2. What kind of standing stone am I? What about my life says to other people, “The Lord is God”?

3. What specific action(s) could I take today to become a standing stone to other people in the future?
